Growing into the Image of Christ
The Scriptures often refer to Christians “growing into the image or likeness of Christ” and, in fact, commands us to do so.
Consider Matthew 5:48 (Jesus speaking in the Sermon on the Mount, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
This verse is very easy to take out of context (which is unhelpful at best, and dangerous at worst). It is about agape love.
A very good teaching on this may be read at:
"What did Jesus mean when he said, "You shall be perfect, as your Father in heaven is perfect"?
If you take a few minutes to read that blog, you will see that the original Greek verb tense is future indicative (meaning it will occur and be true in the future – it actually will happen) and in the 2nd person plural (meaning all of us).
Will it happen all at once now or in the future – or does it happen over our lifetime? It seems to me that, if we want it to, it can happen over our lifetime and should be somewhat apparent that it is happening, we are “becoming perfect – complete, lacking nothing” – as our Heavenly Father is.
I like to use the “love chapter (I Corinthians 13) to watch myself grow as the Holy Spirit changes me from glory to glory. The word “love” there is agape love (not phileo) – which is an act of the will. It is about how I treat others, not how I feel about them or about our relationship with them.
